(Jason Merritt/Getty Images) By Jonathan Hailey Believe it or not there was once a time when a mixtape actually had to be recorded on a cassette and was a mix of songs and beat transitions created by hip-hop DJs for fans’ listening pleasures. Many mixtapes have been lost because they were sold on the street or you had to find a way to get your hands on the exclusive tapes. A website,, is changing all of that by finding classic mixtapes and posting them online. The site recently posted a rare mixtape from legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash from 1982. The mixtape is dedicated to an acquaintance of Flash’s known as Money Mike. He makes it clear to Money Mike that he doesn’t want everyone to have this tape.
While The O’Jays’ “For the Love of Money” thumps in the background, Grandmaster Flash says, “Mike, got to tell you man, no copies, no duplicates, no lend outs for any reason in any form or fashion. Thank you, man.” Flash goes on to talk a little bit more before he dives into The Furious Five’s 1982 hit “The Message.” You can download the two-part mixtape.
